Bauer Students Stand Out Through RCC Info Sessions
The journey in finding the right career path can be long and often challenging. However, the Rockwell Career Center makes it easier with events throughout the year that welcomes employers and recruiters eager to hire Bauer College students.
The Fall and Spring Mixers are a chance for students to warm up to the campus community and get to know their career coaches on a personal level. Then, the highly anticipated bi-annual Career Fair brings in hundreds of employers that cover nearly every industry that is relevant to Bauer students. Finally, an important, but often neglected, follow-up to the Career Fair are the informational sessions that take place throughout the semester.
The info sessions hosted throughout the year are often attended by the same companies who participated in the Career Fair. It is just as much an opportunity for the students as it is for the employers to build a more personal connection, said Raji Aiyer, RCC Recruitment and Employer Services Director.
“You have this entire support system here to help you achieve your dream career. Why not take advantage of it?
From major industries like ExxonMobil to local nonprofits like Houston Furniture Bank, the info sessions present new and unique ways for students to be engaged and inspire conversations with recruiters.
When the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently visited campus, recruiters worked with students in solving a real case of a multimillion-dollar theft. BP of America walked students through a live trading simulation to learn how global energy markets move and shift.
Bauer alumnus and Tokio Marine HCC Chief Accounting Officer Jeff Turner (BBA ‘04) is even paying it forward through these RCC info sessions. He recently returned to his alma mater to speak with students about how Bauer prepared him for his career in a specialty insurance firm and shared internship and full-time job opportunities.
Companies like Phillips 66 and Eaton Corporations will invite students to their company sites to educate them on new innovations and share new technologies with them.
“They want to hire Bauer students,” Aiyer said. “That’s why they make the investment to come to our college.”
Info sessions and site visits are a chance for students to connect with the companies they’re interested in working for, she added, with the benefit of having a personal conversation with them that may not be possible in the hustle and bustle of Career Fair.
Aiyer said that Career Fair is a great opportunity for students to scope out where they want to work and hand out résumés. However, the info sessions are where students can really shine and make a connection with future employers.
“Companies want to know these students as individuals,” Aiyer said. “This could be where you can set yourself apart.”
Internships are consistently being added to Bauer Gateway, so meeting with a company beforehand in a personalized setting is a way for students to know if this is a setting they would be interested in working and learning in.
The staff at RCC does so much more for students than check their résumés, Aiyer said. They offer personalized guidance on finding the right career and help conduct mock interviews and when the time comes when students are deciding between two job offers, they will sit down with them to help compare the two.
“You have this entire support system here to help you achieve your dream career,” Aiyer said. “Why not take advantage of it?”
