The Language of Flowers

The Florist Helping Houston Celebrate Love in All Forms

When you’re gifting someone a bouquet on Valentine’s Day, or any day of the year, you are giving them more with just an arrangement of flowers. You are sharing a little piece of your heart with it. That is florist Thalía Jaguande’s mindset, at least.

Jaguande (MBA ‘19) is the owner and heart behind Isidora Flower & Gift Shop. This is one of her favorite times of year because of all the orders that flood in for friends, family and spouses who want to celebrate their love.

Flowers have a language all their own and can often express more than words can say. In all her time as a florist, Jaguande has become accustomed to that language and speaking it into existence with every floral arrangement.

“When you’re gifting someone flowers you are giving them a hug or a kiss. You’re saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m happy for you or I love you.' You are sharing good energy and positivity with that person. It’s beautiful.”

To Jaguande, Isidora is much more than a business. She is with people through significant milestones in their lives. For that reason, she likes to put a little bit of her own energy into every bouquet.

In personalized arrangements, Jaguande and her team take great care to have the flowers reflect the individual and their love story.

For a newly engaged couple, she would arrange a traditional bouquet of roses to keep it romantic. The color palette would be a blend of red, fuchsia and pink to give it dimension. She would wrap the bouquet in paper.

“When you give someone flowers, it is way more romantic carrying them than bringing them in a vase,” she said.

For a passionate artist, Jaguande would look at their paintings for inspiration. She would decide her color palette based on what the artist uses, then arrange the flowers to replicate that style.

She would also try to use a variety of different flowers in the arrangement to represent how fluid and multidimensional art can be.

Then for a familial bond, something for two sisters, she would want to do something completely different. For Jaguande, this would be a more personal bouquet as she grew up with two sisters, and they have always been her best friends, she said.

She would choose an arrangement that has lisianthus, Jaguande’s favorite flower. She would add lots of layers to the bouquet to represent the years of relationships one has with their sister. She would include funky snapdragons that go in different directions and different fillers to show the dimensions of their relationship.

“It’s wild and each stock or snapdragon goes their own way, but at the center, they are together in the same vase,” she said.

Every order that comes in is unique, and Jaguande takes pride in knowing that she can be a part of those special moments in life through her bouquets. From anniversaries to first loves, flowers can be the perfect gift for this Valentine’s season.
