Bauer Entrepreneurship Student Daniel Gwynne Brings Restorative Cold Therapy to Houston
Bauer College Entrepreneur student Daniel Gwynne believes that to be successful means being healthy — mentally and physically. That’s how he came to own and operate Truly Chill, a business that brings the power of cold therapy, mindfulness and breathwork to help others recenter, restore and recover.
Cold therapy, Gwynne describes, is the act of submerging the body in extremely cold water to exercise the cardiovascular system and reconnect with the body.
“No matter how bad your day has been, the moment you get in really cold water, you cannot think of anything else apart from: this is really cold,” he said. “Your body gets into this state of: how do I survive? If you can control yourself, you’ll notice that your body is capable of lasting in cold water.”
"I started trying (cold therapy) and it had such a profound impact on me... my mental and physical health drastically improved.”
He advises that people do this safely and responsibly, which is part of the reason he offers these services through Truly Chill. While people are submerged in the water, he coaches them through deep breathing and mindfulness exercises that help them get in the right mindset and let go of their troubles.
“I don't just teach you the breathwork, and the only time you'll ever do it is with me,” he said. “I teach you this breathwork so that when you have those stressful moments you know exactly what you can do with your breath to calm your body down.”
Gwynne attests to the power of cold therapy and breathwork as it was these methods that helped him get through a dark time in his life, both mentally and physically.
“I got prescribed the same thing that everyone else does, and it just didn’t work for me,” he said, referring to the medication his doctor prescribed. “It was all just treating the symptoms rather than the underlying issue. “I started trying (cold therapy) and it had such a profound impact on me... my mental and physical health drastically improved.”
“I look up to (my network) so much. You can see their growth and think that’s possible for you as well. It’s really inspiring.”
The Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, ranked No. 1 in the nation, provided an incredible network in building his business, he said. The people who he’s connected with and gotten to know through the program helped open his mind to further possibilities for the future, he added.
“I look up to them so much,” he said. “You can see their growth and think that’s possible for you as well. It’s really inspiring.”
