Selfless Service
Bauer Department Chair and Faculty Member Tom Noland
Retires After 32 Years
Thomas Noland, a C. T. Bauer College of Business Department of Accountancy & Taxation faculty member for 32 years, has retired.
Noland has served as Chair of the Department since 2021, and he also was Department Chair from 2001 to 2004.
Noland arrived at Bauer College in 1992 and took on numerous leadership roles while teaching classes in financial accounting, managerial accounting, financial statement analysis and auditing.
Bauer Interim Dean and Cullen Distinguished Professor of Finance Praveen Kumar expressed gratitude for Noland’s many contributions.
“We are very grateful for his many years of selfless service to the College. Tom is also recognized as one of Bauer’s best teachers,” Kumar said.
Noland’s teaching awards include the Payne Teaching Excellence Award and the El Paso Faculty Achievement Award. He has also received the Houston Alumni Organization Outstanding Faculty Award.
His first term as Department Chair was marked by significant student growth and the development of two of the department’s foundational programs: the Accounting Advisory Board and the Certificate in Accountancy (CAP) program.
The Advisory Board’s roster of accounting and taxation professionals offer invaluable in making sure Bauer College students graduate ready to make important contributions in the workforce. CAP is designed for students who want to sit for the CPA exam, but who can’t or don’t want to enroll in the master’s program, Noland said. He was Director of the program until 2013.
While Noland was Chair between 2001 and 2004, the number of undergraduates grew from 231 to 674, and the number of graduate students during that time increased from 50 to 211.
He also served two terms as Associate Dean for Faculty affairs, in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
Noland’s research focused on the study of the economic value of accounting information and independent audits. His paper "The Value of Auditor Assurance: Evidence from Loan Pricing" (with D. Blackwell and D. Winters) received the first Notable Contribution to the Auditing Literature.
Noland derived a great sense of reward from collaborating with junior faculty and Ph.D. students on their research projects, he said.
Professor and Arthur Andersen Chair in Accounting Gerald Lobo will be the next Chair of Bauer’s Department of Accountancy & Taxation.
Lobo has been at Bauer College since 2004 and previously served as Department Chair from 2004 to 2010. Lobo is a prolific scholar who has made sustained and significant contributions to capital markets-based accounting research.
