Putting Teaching First

The C. T. Bauer College of Business Department of Decision & Information Sciences (DISC) is celebrating faculty making an impact inside of the classroom, naming the inaugural DISC Faculty Teaching Award. 

The first recipient is Assistant Professor Leila Hosseini, who teaches several management information systems courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Hosseini joined Bauer College in 2023 from Temple University and has enjoyed connecting with students since.  

“My teaching philosophy centers on creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment in which students develop mastery, strengthen their critical-thinking skills and become confident, independent learners,” she said. “I want students to leave my courses not only with technical knowledge, but also with the curiosity to apply what they have learned and continue growing throughout their careers and lives.” 

After nominees for the award were submitted to DISC Department Chair Meng Li, Associate Dean of Student Affairs Richard Scamell served as the committee chair to select a winner.  

“If I were asked to use just one word to describe Leila Hosseini, it would be the word ‘versatile,’” Scamell said. “Student comments reflect that Leila is viewed by students as a knowledgeable, challenging and stimulating teacher, someone who is available to provide help and encouragement during and outside of class.” 

During her time at the college, Hosseini said she’s had the pleasure of teaching many nontraditional students and witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of a Bauer education. 

“Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college, and many balance their studies with work and other responsibilities,” Hosseini said. “They have worked incredibly hard to reach this point. It is deeply rewarding to see them develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills that expand their professional opportunities and empower them to build the futures they envision for themselves.” 

Hosseini noted that although faculty members balance teaching, research, professional service and many other responsibilities, recognition of teaching serves as an important reminder that student learning and development should remain at the heart of academic work. 

“Teaching is one of the most meaningful aspects of my career because it allows me to help students turn knowledge into confidence, opportunity and meaningful progress in their lives,” she said.  

She added: “When students recognize what they are capable of and use their education to create new opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities, the impact of teaching extends far beyond the classroom. This recognition reaffirms my belief that students must remain at the heart of everything we do as educators.”
