IYKYK: Bauer Student Hacks

Bauer Ambassadors Share Academic, Student-Life Tips

It’s back to business here at Bauer, with many new students joining the college this fall. Bauer Ambassadors started the semester in a crowded Melcher Hall, helping direct more than 500 students to their next class. In between the hustle and bustle, a few ambassadors shared their expertise in navigating Bauer College and the University of Houston.

Christopher Glass

Q: What’s one piece of advice you would share with Bauer freshmen?

A: Always look for your next network. Always connect with students, staff and professionals. Also, join student organizations as well.

Q: What is the best way to balance getting good grades and the rest of college life?

A: Calendar. Calendar. Calendar. Having a calendar is very important. It keeps you stable, but you also have time for flexible hours when you can say, ‘whatever I want to do in this  time is what I want to do’ and ‘this is the time where I need to lock in and actually do work, or focus on my student organization.’

Q: What is your favorite coffee shop on campus?

A: My favorite coffee shop has to be Cougar Grounds. I get chai tea with cinnamon and brown sugar.

Megan Nguyen

Q: What is your favorite Bauer event?

A: Ted Bauer Day last year was really fun. They had a spinning wheel where you could win all sorts of prizes, including a limited-edition sweatshirt, which I did spin and win. They had Bauer bucket hats and Ted Bauer Day cookies. That one was really fun.

Q: What got you through your hardest Bauer class?

A: I definitely would not have survived without my study group. We traded study tips. We helped each other learn the material. The whiteboards in the library were a real game changer too.

Q: What was your favorite Bauer class freshman year?

A: I did like “Connecting Bauer to Business.” They had a bunch of different lessons every day. I felt like it was really varied. We learned professional dinner etiquette. We learned what ‘bread-tiquette’ was; how to tear bread specifically.

Yoana Kigigha

Q: Which Bauer professor has made the biggest impact on you?

A: Professor Thompson, who teaches “Business Principles.”

Q: What is your favorite Bauer tradition?

A: My favorite Bauer tradition would be the Bauer Involvement Fair. You can go out and talk to all the different officers and organizations within Bauer.

Q: What’s your favorite lunch spot on campus?

A: My favorite lunch spot would have to be Cougar Woods.

Q: What is your best study hack?

A: It starts with time management. Set aside a block of time on your calendar to ensure that you have enough time to study, and then just sit down and lock in. Make sure you know you have no distractions. Turn the screens off and study.

Q: What is the best way to make friends on campus?

A: Try to be involved with a lot of organizations. I think that's the best way to make close friends within your major. But if you're looking for other ways, there are non-professional organizations. Maybe go to The Rec, say ‘what's up’ to somebody, and get a lift in. That's what I do.
