From Bauer to D.C.

Six Students Experience D.C. Through Fellowship Program

Six undergraduate students from the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston will spend the spring semester interning in Washington, D.C., through the college’s Bauer in D.C. Fellowship Program

The students will live and work in full-time internships in the nation’s capital for the next four months in a range of organizations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Department of State, congressional representative teams, and bipartisan offices for technology and government relations. 

Undergraduates Anthony Pesina, Ramya Valipe, David Torres, Jr., Jasmine Wani, Shahzaib Vohra and Sinar Sium were selected through a competitive application process and represent the 13th class of the fellowship program. 

“The Spring 2025 Bauer in D.C. Fellows are poised to witness history and make their mark on Washington, D.C., this semester,” said Bauer in D.C. Fellowship Program Director Colleen Davies. “We are so proud of them and know they will represent Bauer well in our nation's capital.” 

ANTHONY PESINA
Management senior

Anthony Pesina will intern this semester with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business organization, advocating for pro-business policies and providing a platform for collaboration across industries. Pesina will support the HR department, focusing on recruitment initiatives and contributing to projects that enhance organizational effectiveness and employee engagement.  

Pesina’s goal for the semester is to develop practical HR expertise while supporting key talent acquisition and workforce initiatives and representing Bauer and UH in the nation’s capital.  

RAMYA VALIPE
Management Information Systems senior

Ramya Valipe will intern this semester with TechNet. This trade organization is a bipartisan effort to support technology companies driving the innovation economy. TechNet advances public policies and private sector initiatives at the federal, state and local levels that make the United States the world leader in innovation.   

Valipe’s goal for the semester is to gain an industry-wide understanding of major players in the innovation economy and the legislative initiatives related to them.  

DAVID TORRES, JR.
Finance junior

David Torres, Jr. is interning on Capitol Hill with Congressman Michael Cloud this upcoming semester. Rep. Cloud represents the 27th district of Texas, which includes cities like Victoria and Corpus Christi. He has previously served on the House Committee on Appropriations, the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, and the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.   

 Torres’s goal for the semester is to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process and expand his knowledge of key policy issues related to the areas of business and finance.  

JASMINE WANI
Management Information Systems junior

Jasmine Wani will intern this semester at Cornerstone Government Affairs. Cornerstone is a bipartisan consulting firm specializing in federal and state government relations, strategic communications, political consulting, grant consulting, and business advisory services. Wani will be working in the operations department.   

Her goal for the semester is to learn the fundamentals of operations in government affairs and immerse herself in the D.C. experience.  

SHAHZAIB VOHRA
Management Information Systems junior

Shahzaib Vohra will intern with the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Diplomatic Technology this semester. The Bureau of Diplomatic technology has a mission to create an interconnected, secure, and informed State Department through the application of IT resources.  

His goal for the semester is to create lasting professional connections and gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s legal system.  

SINAR SIUM
Marketing senior

Sinar Sium is interning at Capitol Hill for Congressman Sylvester Turner. Sium will be helping each department as the only intern in the office. Sium is most excited to work on press releases and improve her skills with the marketing team. 

 Her goal for the semester is to take advantage of the access she will have around historic grounds while working at Capitol Hill.
