Dos and Don'ts: Rodeo Houston
Tips and Tricks to Enjoying the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo: Bauer College Style
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is underway and a great destination for Bauer College students, alumni and friends to hit during the upcoming Spring Break.
Whether or not this is your first rodeo, we have a few tips to help you enjoy one of our city’s favorite events.
Do: Enjoy the Carnival – The carnival is an iconic staple of the Rodeo with an abundance of rides, games, food and other activities. There truly is something for everyone!
Don't: Eat Before Enjoying Rides – This is a given but should still be said. Scarfing down a greasy (but delicious) turkey leg before an intense ride is a recipe for disaster. Trust us on this one.
Do: See the Animals – From bunnies to bulls, take a gander at all the livestock shown off at the Rodeo. Plus, you can learn a lot!
Don't: Show Up Without a Plan – Like we’ve said, there is a lot to do at the Rodeo (probably way more than most people think, even if you’ve attended before). Just like you would for class, do a little advance research so that you can have a plan and get the most out of the 20-day event.
Do: Attend a Concert – With a live concert every night of the Rodeo, there is bound to be someone that will be perfect for your music taste. And even if you cannot get to a concert, there is plenty of music to enjoy out on the fairgrounds.
Don't: Arrive Late – There is so much to do at the Rodeo so showing up late may hinder the experience of getting to do everything you want to.
Do: Network – With 300 different vendors and businesses in attendance, it certainly will not hurt getting to know who’s there and how they could help further your career.
Don't: Try Bull Riding – If you are professionally trained, sure go ahead, and get out there. However, most of us should stay away and enjoy the show from the stands. It is much safer to just try a mechanical bull if you want that thrill.
Do: Dress Up – Dust off those cowboy boots and get into the Rodeo spirit. You do not have to go all out, but dressing the part makes the experience better, in our opinion.
Don't: Focus on the Screen – Don’t be that person that sits on their phone the whole time. Use only when necessary (like pictures with friends and family). The most memorable sights at the Rodeo are live and in person.
Do: Stay for the Drone Show – One of the more recent additions to the Rodeo — every night ends with a drone light show. Stay late and take in the glory.
Don't: Be Discouraged from Walking – A full day at the Rodeo means you'll be getting a lot more steps than you do in just a line dance. Find rest stops and relax with some food to take the pressure off a full day of walking in the nearly 2 million-square-foot facility that is NRG Stadium. (And maybe break in those cowboy boots ahead of time.)
Do: Show Your UH/Bauer Pride – As always, show your Bauer pride! Bust out those Coog Paws and University of Houston polos to make your presence known.
Don't: Leave Early – We love Houston, but we abhor Houston traffic. That being said, you’ll probably be stuck in a jam no matter what time you leave the event. Stay late and just enjoy everything the Rodeo has to offer. It is only here for a short time!
