Bauer in Your Backyard

Popular Bauer Courses Available for Business, Non-Business
Students in Katy

Students living in the Katy area can now enroll in Bauer College courses in their own backyard, with business offerings coming to the University of Houston Katy campus this fall.

With a significant portion of the university’s students living in the Katy area, the new offerings will be located conveniently close to their homes, cutting back on commute times. This is something that Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Business Programs Olivia Miljanic says helps work toward the mission of student success.

“The part of their day that they would otherwise spend commuting to and from campus, they will be able to put those hours towards taking more classes, studying, working, being at home, tending to their personal interests, resting and all of these other things,” she said. “We know that it's not just the usual commute time, but it can be unpredictable, that it can be a source of stress not knowing exactly how long it's going to take you every day to get from point A to point B.”

Bauer is offering three undergraduate business courses in Katy this fall, including Entrepreneurship (ENTR 3310), Intro to Personal Finance (BUSI 3300) and Intro to Org. Behavior and Management (MANA 3335). All three of the popular offerings are partly or fully face-to-face.

ENTR 3310 is part of the curriculum of Bauer’s Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, the No. 1 undergraduate entrepreneurship program in the country. Students interested in the prestigious program should take ENTR 3310 prior to applying.

Students in other UH colleges can enroll in the course, as ENTR 3310 can be used to satisfy the Social and Behavioral Science core requirement. More than half of the students who take the course are non-business students, Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Endowed Chair Ed Blair said, who is also the chair of the Department of Marketing & Entrepreneurship

“I think everybody is interested in the idea of entrepreneurship,” Blair said. “People are interested in using entrepreneurship as a way for personal fulfillment and to generate income. Also, for a non-business student, you get an overview of business in a single course.”

BUSI 3300 is another high-demand business elective, open to all UH students. The longstanding course will be available for the first time in Katy this fall and teaches the fundamentals of handling money.

“The topics we cover in that class are cash management, credit, savings, budgeting, investing, how to buy houses, how to buy cars, how to do investing, how to do retirement planning, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, IRAs and Roth accounts,” Senior Professor of Practice John C. Lopez said. “So, it's a pretty exhaustive course on empowering students to how to take control of their money and how to manage their money.”

MANA 3335 is part of the core business major curriculum and is offered in a face-to-face format in Katy. The course teaches general management functions and the role of different behaviors in the management process.

Bauer College will offer two undergraduate management courses at Katy in Spring 2026, with plans to expand graduate curriculum there as well.

“There is a need there to do graduate programs, particularly within healthcare because there is a great expansion and growth of medical organizations and medical- and health-related businesses in the area,” Associate Dean of Graduate & Professional Programs Leiser Silva said.
