Bauer Has Heart

Bauer Staff Member Leads UH Spirit Bell Competition

At the C. T. Bauer College of Business, Assistant to the Dean Shaneika Gradney is at the heart of school spirit, and she’s lending her energy to lead some of this year's UH  Homecoming festivities.

Gradney is the co-chair of the UH Staff Council Events Committee and encourages participation within the college. As different teams vie for the Homecoming Spirit Bell, Gradney has been promoting faculty and staff to “go hard or go home,” and to decorate their doors, offices and hallways. For her, these events are a part of Bauer College’s student-first environment.

" Not just for Homecoming, but with every event we do with the university, we want to make sure the students know that we care,” Gradney said. “These are things that they will remember during their many semesters here. The more we do, the more memorable the experience is.”

Bauer's Office of Undergraduate Business Programs won the Spirit Bell competition in 2022.

In recent years, units within Bauer have won first place in the university-wide competition. The Rockwell Career Center has won the top spot in 2024 and 2023. In 2022, Bauer’s Office of Undergraduate Business Programs won.

Units are judged on originality, Cougar spirit, creativity and overall appearance. Teams can get bonus points for incorporating the “Heart of Houston” Homecoming theme in their decorations.

Gradney said she always makes an effort to participate in her spare time and is proud to represent Bauer at the university level. For years, Gradney has decorated for Homecoming, but now holding a leadership position, she said the experience has been worthwhile.

“This experience brings us closer together to celebrate the University of Houston, the hard work that those boys put out there on the football field and the families that travel all the way here to have a good game. It's about those memories that really tie into what we stand for."

Spirit Bell judging will take place Oct. 14-15. The winner will be announced on Oct. 17.
