A Significant Contribution

Bauer Management & Leadership Professor Elected to Fellows Group of the Academy of Management

Derek R. Avery, the C. T. Bauer Chair of Inclusive Leadership at the C. T. Bauer College of Business, has been elected to the Fellows Group of the Academy of Management (AOM) – a distinction recognizing and honoring AOM members who have made significant contributions to the science of practice and management.

Avery, known for his research into workplace diversity, diversity climates, and inclusivity in leadership, is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and for the Association for Psychological Science. He previously served as an associate editor of the Journal of Business and Psychology, the diversity and inclusion officer for SIOP, and on editorial boards of numerous top tier journals.

“This honor is both simultaneously humbling and validating,” Avery said. “To me, it is tangible evidence of a return on the investments numerous others have made in me and for me."

“It took more than a century of civil rights activism for someone like me to even have the opportunity to become a professor. Beyond that, it took decades of pioneering diversity scholarship for the journals I’ve managed to publish in to begin including the type of research I conduct."

He added: “Throughout my life, my family, friends, teachers, mentors, collaborators and students have invested countless hours, helping me sharpen my skills and supporting me along the way. I hope that this honor shows them that their investments and continued belief in me is paying dividends. I listened to their lessons, learned from their feedback, and continue striving to be a better person and professor.”

Management & Leadership Department Chair Steve Werner, the JPMorgan Chase Professor of International Business, said the AOM Fellows Group recognition is a rare honor, “bestowed only on the most productive, impactful, and accomplished management scholars in the world.”

“Less than 1% of management professors have achieved this milestone,” Werner said. “We are thrilled that Dr. Avery’s extensive record of excellent scholarship is being recognized by his induction into the Fellows Group.”
