A Commitment to Excellence in Teaching

Bauer Director of Accounting Program Initiatives Recognized as Outstanding Accounting Educator by TxCPA

The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TxCPA) recognized Bauer Director of Accounting Program Initiatives Michael Kraten with the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award during the 2024 TXCPA Annual Meeting of Members and Leadership Council.

The award recognizes Texas accounting educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession.

β€œMike is committed to excellence in teaching,” Department Chair Thomas Noland said. β€œHis ability to engage students through innovative instructional methods enhances their understanding of the subject matter and inspires them to pursue careers in accounting.”

Kraten began his professional career at Deloitte in assurance and consulting practices. After a few years in several consulting positions, he transitioned into higher education, most recently serving as the chair of accounting and professor of accounting at Houston Christian University.

Kraten designs and teaches courses in sustainability while also developing financial courses that apply to the advancements of artificial intelligence.

"I am immensely gratified by TxCPA's award for Outstanding Accounting Educator. I do believe, though, that their designation actually recognizes the leading role that the University of Houston is playing in the design of new and innovative approaches to accounting education," Kraten said. "I am merely one example of UH's success in this area."

He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the TXCPA, Leadership Council for the TXCPA, Editorial Advisory Board of the CPA Journal and the Advisory Board for the Center for Professional Accounting Practices at Fordham University.
